Manchester United chief Ed Woodward delivers transfer news to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

According to ESPN, Manchester United CEO Ed Woodward has informed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that the club needs to be more careful with their spending in the transfer market.

The Red Devils’ manager was planning to make at least three major signings in the next summer transfer window. However, he has now been told by Woodward that while the club will back him in the market, he will need to exercise caution in spending.

This is majorly due to the coronavirus pandemic and the effect that it has had on the finances of the club. It was pretty much the case last summer as well, which saw us get linked with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish.

However, the club only loosened the purse strings for the signings of Donny van de Beek and Amad Diallo, with the likes of Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri arriving in bargain deals.

While the club posted profits in commercial revenue last year, the retail revenue and broadcasting revenue were considerably down. This will now impact the club’s transfer plans heading into the summer transfer window.

Having failed to land Sancho last summer, the Red Devils were planning to do so this year, and are also interested in his teammate, Erling Haaland. In addition, a move for a defensive midfielder, in the form of Declan Rice is also in the plans. (h/t Express)

In addition to that, Solskjaer also sought to bolster his defensive ranks with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof not being consistent enough. However, with Woodward now calling for restraint in the market, it will be interesting to see who the club goes after.
