Manchester United star Marcos Rojo agrees a two year deal with Argentine giants Boca Juniors
According to ESPN (h/t The Daily Mail), Manchester United defender, Marcos Rojo is close to leaving the club after agreeing to a two-year deal with Boca Juniors.
The 30-year-old has not made a senior appearance for the club this season. In fact, he has been a bit-part player since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as United manager.
Rojo is keen to return to his homeland and appears to be doing just that with the Azul y Oro. However, for the potential deal to go ahead, United will need to waive any transfer fee they feel are entitled to.
Boca are unwilling to pay a transfer fee. Rojo will now have to come to an agreement with United to void his contract and leave on a free transfer.
With his contract up in the summer, any refusal to do so will see the player sit on the sidelines until the end of the season.
Rojo joined United from Sporting Lison in 2014. While he enjoyed regular game time under Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer saw otherwise.
Injuries too have not helped his cause at Old Trafford. Rojo has made a mere 122 appearances for the club in his six-and-a-half-year stay at United.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Estudiantes but was only able to make a solitary appearance. Rojo is currently recovering from a calf injury sustained in October.
The player has also drawn interest from Premier League sides Sheffield United and Newcastle United. Whether they can work out a deal that can please both United and the player remains to be seen. (h/t The Daily Mail)

With just months left on his contract, United’s options regarding Rojo are limited. Unless they can get Sheffield or Newcastle to fork out money, terminating the player’s contract seems like the best option.
Rojo is not an important player and can be deemed expendable. While we may not be able to recoup the £16m paid for him, the club can at the very least save half a year’s worth of wages by doing so. After all, he could very well walk away for nothing come next summer.
