A report by Manchester Evening News states that Sergio Romero has said his goodbyes to some members of the Manchester United staff ahead of a possible move in January.

Furthermore, the Argentine goalkeeper has not trained with the club since the start of 2021. Instead, he is training in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires ahead of the Copa America scheduled to take place in the summer.

Romero is linked with a move to Argentine giants Boca Juniors and the club has already given him permission to train in his home country. (h/t Manchester Evening News)

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero could finally be on his way out.

However, he could be called back to the club if he fails to secure a move away from Old Trafford in January. The goalkeeper was earlier denied a transfer away from United on deadline day of the summer transfer window.

Good riddance?

It is no surprise that the club and the player are looking to part ways. Romero has failed to cement his position in the starting XI since he joined in 2015.

The former Sampdoria goalkeeper has started in just 7 league games for the club during that time. Moreover, his last league start came all the way back in May 2018.

It is clear that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prefers Dean Henderson as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper. With Henderson and David de Gea at the club, it is highly unlikely Romero would ever get a string of starts in the future.

United also have the option to extend his contract by one year. His current contract runs out in the summer.

Apart from Romero, Marcos Rojo is also back in Argentina ahead of a possible move in January. If the club manages to offload the duo, who are represented by the same agency, they can save up to £200,000 on the wage bill.
