The Carabao Cup semi-final fixture list is out, and Manchester United will face Manchester City in a mammoth derby. (h/t official EFL website)
The Manchester Derby will be played during the first week of January 2021, with the exact date and kick-off time to be announced soon.
This is the 4th semi-final that Manchester United have reached under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils made the semi-finals in three cup competitions last year, but lost all of them.
Ironically, United were dumped out in the same stage of the same competition by the same opponents in the 2019/20 season.
Manchester City won the first leg of that semi-final tie by a 3-1 scoreline at Old Trafford. The aggregate scoreline was too much for the Red Devils to overturn as their 1-0 second-leg win was not enough to qualify.
United now have a chance at redemption. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have reached this stage after an impressive 2-0 win over Everton on Wednesday night.
Manchester City blew Arsenal away 4-1 in the quarter-final to earn their place in the semi-final. The other semi-final fixture sees a favourable draw for Tottenham Hotspur, who will face Brentford.
A feisty Domestic Cup history
This will the 21st time that the Manchester derby will be played in a domestic cup competition. United hold the edge in this fixture with 12 wins out of the 20 cup matches played against City.
Cup Matches Played | 20 |
Manchester United wins | 12 |
Manchester City wins | 7 |
Draws | 1 |
The first domestic cup encounter between the two Manchester clubs came on 3rd October, 1891 in the FA Cup first qualifying round. United ran out 5-1 winners on that occassion.
This is also the 4th Manchester derby at this stage of the League Cup. Manchester City won the 1969 and 2020 semi-finals, while United went through to the 2010 League Cup final.
