Now playing with Den Haag in Holland, he is a far cry from the world-beater he was touted to become. It would appear that there is a genuine belief that Greenwood could fritter his career away.

Apart from Solskjaer, United’s coaches and even Sir Alex Ferguson believe Greenwood’s natural goal-scoring ability makes him an exceptional talent.

The youngster has been in the midst of controversy in recent months. He was caught smuggling girls into England’s team hotel along with Phil Foden before the game in Iceland in September.

Concerns are also growing that the United star wasn’t putting all his energy into his football career. It does not augur well for a talent who could be special.

A lack of clarity

There have been reports of the player being late for training on occasions. Although denied by Solskjaer, there is concern that late nights mean he isn’t getting the required rest and sleep needed to perform at the top level.

Greenwood was also curiously absent from the squad at Goodison Park last weekend. It was claimed by Solskjaer that the teenager had an illness.

The same was curiously not used as a reason by England Under-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd while excluding Rashford from the squad for games against Andorra and Albania.
