Ryan Giggs expects Mason Greenwood to thrive in the number 11 jersey
According to the Sun, Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has backed youngster Mason Greenwood to thrive in the number 11 jersey.
The youngster has been handed the iconic number ahead of the 2020-21 campaign. Giggs has no doubt that Greenwood has what it takes to do justice to the number’s legacy.
“He’s nearly already scored more goals than I did, so there’s no pressure in that respect.”
As someone who has sported the number during his stay at the club, Giggs has set the bar high when it comes to those following in his footsteps.
If his initial performances are to be considered, Greenwood has done a fine job in managing the expectations on him.
Giggs has a high opinion of the youngster and does not feel he will wither under the pressure of sporting the number.
“I don’t think he’ll feel the pressure of the number.”
While Giggs averaged 0.17 goals per game for United, Greenwood has an impressive 0.32 goals per game. This is however offset by the fact that the Welshman has played over 17 times the games Greenwood has.
Greenwood enjoyed a fine breakout season last time around and formed a formidable frontline alongside Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
He scored 17 goals and 5 assists in 49 appearances as United eventually finished third and also made it to the semifinals of all three cups. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Giggs believes Greenwood will eventually play as a centre-forward. Given his proficiency in front of goal, it is a position he could thrive in.
