Josep Bartomeu dismisses reports that Manchester United bid for Ansu Fati
According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t MEN), Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has dismissed the notion that Manchester United have made a bid for Ansu Fati.
The 17-year-old was said to have been subject to what would have been a club-record bid earlier this year. It now appears that was not the case.
“We haven’t had any formal offers but there has been interest from some clubs.”
Bartomeu confirmed that although no formal bids have been made for Fati, interest in him remains high.
One of Barcelona’s best young talents, the Catalans are keen to build their team around the young winger. The same was confirmed by the club’s president.
“Barça’s answer has always been ‘no’. Ansu isn’t for sale and is indispensable for the future of the club.”
Barcelona are at a crossroad where they will have to start making some tough decisions. With the core of his squad ageing, an infusion of youth is necessary.
Lionel Messi cannot play forever, while most of the club’s big-money moves in recent times have been duds. Given the situation, it is understandable why they are keen to hold onto their best young talents.
Bartomeu went on to add that Fati will not be sold under any circumstances. This includes attempts to balance the books during the pandemic.
“Barça can’t sell Ansu, even if it might feel like an option to balance the books during a pandemic.”
Primarily a left-winger, Fati is capable of playing anywhere along the frontline. He has made 32 appearances for the Catalans this season, scoring eight goals and one assist. (h/t Transfermarkt)
