Alan Shearer backs Mason Greenwood to break his all-time PL goalscorer
Speaking on the Match of the Day (h/t Daily Mail), Premier League legend Alan Shearer has backed Manchester United wonderkid Mason Greenwood to break his all-time goal tally.
The 18-year-old brought United level against West Ham United at Old Trafford yesterday. It could prove to be an important point once the season comes to an end.
Greenwood has been in brilliant form since the restart. He has now scored five goals in seven games as United find themselves in third spot. Alongside Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, he has formed a triumvirate worthy of challenging any front three in English football.
The goal against the Hammers was Greenwood’s 17th of the campaign. It has seen him draw level with club legends Wayne Rooney and George Best for goals scored by a teenager in one single season for Manchester United.
He is now officially one of the most prolific youngsters in the club’s history. (h/t Daily Mail)
With potentially more than a decade of top-flight football to come, Shearer has no doubt that Greenwood will rank alongside the greatest ever.
“I think in 12 or 13 years time we could be talking about the Premier League record goalscorer.”
A two-footed player, Greenwood has been clinical when given opportunities. He has proved himself to be a nightmare to defenders and goalkeepers.
“He’s 18 years of age, he’s going to get bigger, he’s going to get better.”

Greenwood could become the third United forward to breach the 20-goal barrier this season. With potentially five more matches left this season, he could very well reach the goal tally sooner than later.
Shearer holds the record of being the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer. At 260 goals, the target is a daunting prospect. But with every goal, Greenwood is getting closer to that vaunted tally.
