Patrick van Aanholt names Aaron Wan-Bissaka a better defender than Trent Alexander-Arnold
According to the Counter Attack Podcast (h/t Metro), Crystal Palace star Patrick van Aanholt has named Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a better defender than Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Dutchman has a first-hand idea of our star’s ability, having played alongside him at Selhurst Park. Wan-Bissaka made a name for himself at Palace, before making the move to Old Trafford last summer.
He has been a resounding success at United and is now the club’s first-choice defender on the right. A bane for attackers, many have found getting past the Englishman as a daunting prospect.
His performances have naturally led to comparisons with Liverpool wonderkid Trent Alexander-Arnold. Van Aanholt, however, believes that the matter deserves no discussion when it comes to defensive aptitude.
“Defensively, Aaron is unbelievable, better than Trent.”
Van Aanholt has used teammate and former United star Wilfried Zaha as the common point of reference to make his point. A left-winger by trade, the Palace attacker will have come up against both players either in a match or in training.
Aanholt believes Zaha would rather face Alexander-Arnold over Wan Bissaka, further lending credibility to our number 29’s defensive prowess.
Zaha has faced off against the Liverpool star four times. Although Palace lost all four games, he has scored once and assisted two more while facing Alexander-Arnold.
Although Van Aanholt acknowledges Alexander-Arnold’s attacking prowess, he has backed Wan-Bissaka to step up his offensive ability in the future.

Alexander-Arnold is a generational talent who has impressed both fans and foes alike. Although the Merseysider’s attacking skills cannot be downplayed, there is no doubt that Wan-Bissaka is a better defensive option.
