Dean Henderson believes he should be starting over David de Gea as number one
According to Duncan Castles (h/t Express), on loan goalkeeper Dean Henderson believes he is better than current Manchester United number one David de Gea.
Currently on loan at Sheffield United, Henderson has impressed in his first season in the top-flight. He has played a pivotal role in a high-flying Blades side with an outside chance of a top-four finish.
He has kept more clean sheets than De Gea and is in the running for the Premier League Golden Glove. Just 23, Henderson has posted numbers comparable to the United star. He does lack in experience when compared to the Spaniard but has the potential to become an elite goalkeeper.
According to Castles, Henderson has no interest in returning to Old Trafford as De Gea’s backup.
“He believes he’s better than De Gea and believes he should be the starter.”
Castles believes that Henderson would rather go out on loan once again rather than become the number two at United.
United are in an enviable position where they have two talented keepers vying for the top spot. De Gea has regressed over the last two years, but it remains to be seen if Henderson is ready to step up as the United number one.
One of the best young keepers available, United should not risk alienating the youngster. With his current contract up in 2022, United are considering offering him a new contract. This will not only acknowledge his increased value but also protect his future at Old Trafford (h/t ESPN).
De Gea will turn 30 this year and will not be at the club forever. Henderson is a capable, upcoming keeper who has shown he has the potential to replace the Spaniard. If and when he does will be a difficult question to answer for United.

Henderson has made 27 appearances in the Premier League and has kept 10 clean sheets this season. He is behind only Nick Pope in the race for the golden glove.
He has been a consistent performer for a couple of years now. Henderson won the EFL Golden Glove in 2019 and was also a part of the English team that won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2017.
