Lee Sharpe opens up on difficult relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson
Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe has admitted that he had a difficult relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson during his time at the club (h/t ManUtd.com).
Sharpe signed for Manchester United from Torquay United in 1988 and enjoyed a memorable eight-year stint at the club.
The former England international made 165 appearances for our side, in which he scored 24 goals and assisted 27 more. He won three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and a League Cup before leaving the club for Leeds United in 1996.
While Sharpe looks back on his time at Manchester United fondly, the former left-winger has admitted that his relationship with then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson was a little rocky (h/t ManUtd.com).
“It [the relationship] got quite difficult in the fact that he thought I didn’t take the game seriously enough.”
The 48-year-old then went on to claim that the legendary Scotsman, who was known to be a strict disciplinarian, had a go at Sharpe’s performances, his haircuts, friends, clothes and car (h/t ManUtd.com).
The manager didn’t spare the winger even when he had performed well and scored winners, as he took a shot at his celebrations (h/t ManUtd.com).
“In the end, I thought if you’re going to have a go when I play well and when I play badly, what’s the point of me listening? I’ll do what I want and you can have a go at me, however you choose. So crack on that way. ”
