David Moyes wanted to sign Saul Niguez back in 2014
According to a report from MEN (h/t Metro), former Manchester United manager David Moyes had sent scouts to watch Saul Niguez during his stint at the club in 2014. The Spaniard is now a top transfer target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Saul Niguez has grown into one of the most coveted midfielders across Europe. The Atletico Madrid academy graduate has grown into one of the most pivotal members of Diego Simeone’s side over the years.
The 25-year-old, in the 2019/20 campaign, has featured 37 times in all competitions, scoring four goals.
Manchester United have been linked with a summer switch for Saul, who has a release clause of £135m in his contract (h/t Metro).
And it has now emerged that David Moyes had his eye on the midfielder back in 2014 itself, when the Spaniard was just 19 years of age (h/t Metro).
Ryan Giggs was closing on his retirement and Darren Fletcher was battling illness. Hence, Moyes was intent on bringing in a new central midfielder. To that end, the Scotsman sent his assistant Phil Neville to scout Saul Niguez while he was on loan at Rayo Vallecano (h/t Metro).
Moyes was intent on signing the midfielder in the summer but was sacked in April 2014 (h/t Metro). Following this, Manchester United also cooled their interest in the Spanish international as Louis van Gaal took over the reins.

David Moyes’ ill-fated reign will be remembered for United’s inability to finish within the top six of the Premier League. This came when we had lifted the title the previous season.
Moyes struggled at Old Trafford, no doubt. But it seems like he had an eye for talent as Saul has grown into one of the best midfielders.
