Man United use older mascots to raise awareness about loneliness
According to a report by BBC, Manchester United recently made use of older mascots to greet the players before the game against Watford last weekend.
An initiative that has also been adopted by Manchester City, Burnley and Swedish club AIK, this campaign aims to highlight the effects of loneliness on the elderly.
Two local fans aged 61 and 87 were all smiles as the players exchanged handshakes. The report adds that United’s director of partnership wants the team to interact with the older fans as well.
Speaking about the same, Sean Jefferson said:
“Any small gesture and interaction can play a part in helping to help tackle loneliness amongst our older generation.”
As per Age UK (h/t BBC), more than two million people aged 75 and above are plagued by feelings of loneliness after years of living alone.
