Chris Smalling set to leave Manchester United for AS Roma

Sky Italy (h/t Sky Sports) claims that Manchester United’s Chris Smalling will join AS Roma on loan for €3m.

The 29-year-old is yet to play for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team this season and his chances will be limited after the signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

The England centre-back is expected to finish his medical later on Thursday as he flies to Italy, according to the report.

Talks between the two clubs started with United wanting €20m for Smalling as the move contained an option to buy the defender, however, the report claims a one year loan was agreed upon to avoid further hassles in the deal.

Roma want to sign an experienced defender after losing Kostas Manolas in the summer and have been linked with other Premier League stars such as Toby Alderweireld and Dejan Lovren.

The English defender has been the longest-serving United player in the current squad, after having joined from Fulham in 2010.

No replacement for Smalling

United cannot sign any players until the winter window but we have other centre-backs on our books.

Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo should be enough to provide cover for Maguire and Victor Lindelof this season.

Smalling started off last season in decent form but lost his way as the campaign progressed. The 29-year-old leaving the club on loan doesn’t make much sense and selling him now would have been better.
