Manchester United have become the “leading contenders” to sign French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, according to France Football (h/t Mirror).

The 21-year-old has been excellent for Lyon since last season, and the report claims that Barcelona, Tottenham and Manchester City are also interested in the Frenchman.

The report adds that United would have to pay more than €50million, with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas claiming they have turned down similar bids for the 21-year-old.

Lyon want a figure similar to the fee paid for United star Paul Pogba (h/t Mirror), and Ndombele could be sold to the highest bidder.

The midfielder also spoke about turning down a move in the summer and told Canal Football Club (h/t Mirror):

“The club was firm, they didn’t want me to leave. I didn’t feel like leaving, and I think that today you can see that it was the best decision for me.

“Things are going well, I am playing a lot of games, and I am in the French national team. So, I think for the moment it was the best decision.

“I don’t imagine how my career will go, I live it instead.

“Of course they are big clubs, I don’t close the door to anyone.”

The French midfielder further claimed that he never thought of playing for a club in particular when he was young.

“When I was young I didn’t dream of being in this or that club (like PSG), whether it is Real Madrid, Barcelona, City, I have never dreamed of being in a specific club like that.”

United could do with someone as combative as Ndombele in midfield but his price point seems to be extremely high at the moment. The Red Devils have had defensive issues this season, and we could do with a quality centre-back joining in January.
