Manchester United have seen a £80m bid to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly rejected, according to La Repubblica (h/t Metro).
Jose Mourinho wanted to sign a central defender in the summer, as per the report, but no deal was done for Toby Alderweireld or Harry Maguire.
The report adds that United have told Napoli they will offer the same amount in the summer too, but the Italian side believe the 27-year-old is worth more.
The Serie A giants are looking at more than £89m for the defender (h/t Metro). The report adds that the Senegal defender has attracted the interest of several top clubs such as Manchester City, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
Koulibaly is one of the best defenders in the world and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Napoli are trying to get as much as they can for the 27-year-old.
Aurelio de Laurentiis is a tough nut to crack, something that Chelsea found out in the summer when they tried to sign Jorginho and Maurizio Sarri.
United do need some quality in the heart of the defence as they have struggled to keep the opposition from scoring.

Someone like Koulibaly would be an excellent addition to the side, and our January spendings will be important as we look to break into the Champions League place this season.
