Former Newcastle United player Chris Waddle believes Rafa Benitez should be an option to replace Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
The Portuguese manager has found it tough to get the Red Devils going this season. United have lost three out of their nine Premier League ties so far and Mourinho’s future is in doubt, as per the Express.
The report adds that Zinedine Zidane and Antonio Conte have been linked with the job but Waddle believes Benitez could be a good fit at United.
“I think Rafa Benitez should be a candidate to replace Jose Mourinho at Manchester United,” Waddle told SportingBet (h/t Express).
“He is definitely good enough and has that big club experience having won trophies around Europe. Manchester United might not consider him due to his history with Liverpool, but there’s no doubt in my mind he would be a good choice.”
Waddle believed that Benitez could leave Newcastle unless things improve under Mike Ashley. The Magpies are without a win after nine Premier League games and the former Magpie was certain this would be another relegation-threatened season.
Although Benitez has done well with Newcastle – and saved Chelsea by becoming an interim manager and leading them to the Europa League – it would certainly be a huge call to make him the manager of the Red Devils.

His history of working with Liverpool might be too big a bridge for some fans and hopefully, we don’t have to think about replacing Mourinho anytime soon.
