The Daily Mail reports that Manchester United have opened talks with Bayern Munich over a deal to bring German defender Jerome Boateng. The report claims that talks between the Red Devils and the Bundesliga giants took place on Sunday night.
The former Manchester City defender did play in the second half of the 1-0 win over United in the pre-season friendly and the Daily Mail adds that the German international was offered to us after a deal with Paris Saint-Germain could not be completed.
The Bundesliga giants want £45million for the central defender but United want to bring that price down. The report adds that United want the price to be reduced by £5million and are looking at the £40million mark for the 29-year-old.
The Daily Mail further adds that Jose Mourinho has asked Ed Woodward to sign another central defender.
Boateng is seen as an alternative to Harry Maguire, who is being priced out of a move by his current club Leicester City.
United have been left frustrated in their attempts to sign a central defender this summer as the report adds that the club have not even bid for Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.
Another target for United, Yerry Mina, has agreed a deal to join Everton for a fee of £28.4m.
Boateng does not seem like the defender we can bank on for a few years to come. Even though he has Premier League experience with Manchester City, this could be a panic buy from the club just to ensure we have enough central defenders before the start of the season.
