Even with Lionel Messi scoring, things were not looking good for Argentina in their final World Cup group match. Messi had given the South American side the lead but Nigeria were handed a lifeline when Javier Mascherano conceded an unnecessary penalty.
Victor Moses smartly tucked in the penalty in the 51st minute and for the next 35 minutes, Argentina looked completely dead and buried.
Nigeria only needed a point to quality and one of the greatest players in the world was going to be out, however, up stepped an unlikely hero, Marcos Rojo.
The central defender was in the box for some reason and he incredibly slotted a right-foot volley into the bottom corner, cueing incredible scenes.
Maradona, Messi and almost the entire stadium erupted as the Manchester United man saved a country from descending in chaos.
While the South American side can now look forward to a clash against France, Twitter was having a field day with the goal that saved Messi.

I’m sure Rojo’s winning goal won’t be enough to silence his doubters on Twitter. So I’ll just let this picture speak for itself. #MUFC #RojoIsRed #ARG #WorldCup pic.twitter.com/UdMTjpBF7T
