Cristiano Ronaldo has been the star of the World Cup so far thanks to his hat-trick against Spain in the opening fixture for Portugal.
However, the former Manchester United man was not particularly pleased with what Jose Mourinho had to say about him requiring Luka Modric and Toni Kroos to do well for the Portugal side.
Prior to the meeting with Spain, Mourinho was quoted by The Express as saying:
”Portugal can not expect Cristiano Ronaldo to play at the same level as Real Madrid because they do not have the quality required to support his incredible talents, one thing is Ronaldo for Portugal, another is Ronaldo with Real Madrid, we do not have a [Luka] Modric or a [Toni] Kroos.”
Don Balon (h/t The Express) claims that the Real Madrid man got a wind of these comments and was out to prove Mourinho wrong.
The Portugal legend even contacted Mourinho after the game and claimed that he did not need Kroos or Modric in his side to decide games.
This comes as a bit of a blow as we have constantly been linked with a move for Ronaldo and as such, Mourinho would have to be a little careful about what he says about the Madrid man.
There is no doubt that Ronaldo is one of the greatest in the world of football and hopefully, these comments would not have been taken seriously, especially if we are to bring the star player back to Old Trafford.
Mourinho did praise Ronaldo apart from the comment about Kroos and Modric and it will be interesting to see just how his transfer saga goes should he have a great World Cup with his Portugal side.
