Manchester United announced that youngster D’Mani Mellor signed his first professional contract with the club. A release from the club stated that the “homegrown” product helped the side pick up the U18 Premier League title and was also a part of Nicky Butt’s side which played in the UEFA Youth League.
The statement from the club also added that the player will play an even bigger role for the club ahead of the 2018-19 season. The youngster’s performances certainly spoke as he scored 5 times in 20 games for the Premier League North winners.
Mellor can play in a number 10 role or on the wings and was born in Manchester too. So, he will know the Manchester way.
The 17-year-old had only joined the ranks at United last summer but has been one of our better young players and it is a good move that United tied him down to a professional contract as soon as they got the chance.
This is not the first youth player to have signed professional terms in recent weeks as the likes of Brandon Williams, Dion McGhee, Ethan Galbraith and James Garner have all become professionals, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Signing youth players on professional contracts does give us an idea that our youth setup is doing really well and also ensures that our future is safe as stars such as Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard have broken through the ranks and have made a name for themselves.
Hopefully, this will be the start of something special and we could see something along the likes of the class of 92 emerging from United in a few years or so.
