According to a report by The Guardian, Jose Mourinho is keen to bring Toby Alderweireld to Old Trafford this summer. The report goes on to state that the Belgian centre-back could leave Tottenham for £22m next summer due to a release clause in his contract that would get activated if Spurs choose to extend his contract until 2020.
Despite being a crucial figure for Tottenham in the last couple of seasons, Alderweireld seems to have lost his regular starting spot to Davinson Sanchez, who has been a force to reckon with alongside Jan Vertonghen.
Although Alderweireld’s current contract with the club will expire only in 2020, Tottenham have failed to get him to agree to a new deal so far.
As far as United are concerned, we could most certainly make use of a player like the Tottenham centre-back. Our central defence department lacks quality – a fact that was out for everyone to see as we endured a gut-wrenching 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have been far from consistent and a top-class player in the form of Alderweireld could work wonders to repair our defensive woes.
United must definitely make a move for him. Not only is he experienced, Alderweireld also boasts of exceptional skills that could benefit our performances on the whole.
Mou’s greatest challenge is not chasing Alderweireld- It’s getting Woodward to act. A great CFO has become a huge liability as a CEO. Woodward is so risk averse that he hums, haws, and delays on everything. Good luck Mou.
