Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has predicted that Manchester United will be making some exciting signings during the summer transfer window (h/t the Sport Review)
While our performances this season are arguably the best since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, the fact that we are 13 points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City shows that we will need to make reinforcements during the summer transfer window if we are to stand a chance of competing for the League and other major honours next season.
We have spent heavily since Jose Mourinho was appointed as manager in 2016, succeeding Louis Van Gaal and there has been an improvement in our overall game since the self-proclaimed “Special One” succeeded the Dutchman.
We signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal during the January transfer window in a deal which saw Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to the Gunners in a swap deal.
Sanchez is one of the world’s best attackers and Arsene Wenger’s side had no choice but to let the player go as his contract was set to expire at the end of the season. Had they kept him, he would have in all likelihood left the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.
We have been linked with summer moves for Gareth Bale and Mauro Icardi and Parlour believes that we can look forward to some exciting signings during the summer.
“During the summer, you expect Man United to go into the market and get a couple of big signings,” Parlour told Sky Sports (h/t the Sport Review)
We certainly have quality forwards in our ranks and do not necessarily need to spend heavily on bringing in new attackers during the summer transfer window.
Our midfield is, however, a region that we do need to bolster with Michael Carrick set to retire at the end of the season while the futures of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini are all up in the air.
Mourinho is aware his attack has been completed following the signing of Sanchez, so expect him to put impetus in strengthening our midfield. We definitely need more quality options in midfield to stand a chance of competing for the League and other major titles next season.
