Manchester United set sights on Liverpool’s American target – German champions in the race as well

Christian Pulisic

Jose Mourinho has reportedly identified long-term Liverpool target Christian Pulisic as a potential summer arrival but faces a stiff competition from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

According to a report from Sport Witness, Manchester United are looking out for a possibility of landing Christian Pulisic in the upcoming summer but need to outbid the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich in doing so. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been a long-term admirer of the United States international and back in December 2016, it was quoted that not only Klopp but Liverpool owners FSG were keen on landing him at Anfield. But no move ever materialised.

Pulisic is certainly one for the future and the Reds’ owners believe that signing him would give them a commercial upper hand in the North American continent. However, Klopp, upon joining Liverpool, had reportedly promised that he won’t snatch any player away from Dortmund but it is certain that BVB would not play hardball if Liverpool were amongst the clubs vying for the player.

Everything put aside, Dortmund’s only competitors are Bayern Munich and the Bavarians have reportedly shown a slight interest in the United States international. Liverpool’s desires are further hardened by the fact that Manchester United have entered the fray as well. And as far as Dortmund’s hierarchy are concerned, they would look to block a move to Bayern Munich (remember Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels) and this – in one way or the other – will give the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool an upper hand.

We have already signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal and as for Liverpool, they are in a need of potential reinforcement given that Philippe Coutinho is now a Barcelona player. United manager, Jose Mourinho, might somehow look at the possibility of one or two summer exits and this will automatically pave a way to make an attempt at signing Pulisic.

Given his extreme versatility which allows him to play on either wing, Pulisic will perfectly fit Klopp’s style. However, the presence of the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane would make his chances of getting into the first-team a bit hard. Same goes with Manchester United as we already have Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford vying for the chance to get into the first-team.

So at the end of the day, it will be interesting to see whether Mourinho indeed makes a move for Pulisic or not.
