They say a win is a win no matter how or by how many, and Manchester United lived by the saying as a goal from Anthony Martial gave the Devils all three points against a stern Burnley defence.
Heading into the game with a perfect record since the turn of the year, Manchester United were branded as the favourites despite Burnley performing brilliantly against them at the Old Trafford last time out. Scoring two past Everton, two past Derby and three against Stoke this year, United were cruising in confidence but Sean Dyche’s men eventually proved to be tough nuts to crack.
United hardly created any major goalscoring chances in the first half, with only Paul Pogba coming close to scoring. On the other hand, a similar fate was written for Burnley as Berg Gudmundsson’s left-footed drive was the Clarets’ only highlight. However, just nine minutes after the restart, United broke the deadlock and it was Anthony Martial who slotted home with a perfectly placed venom.
Martial indeed got the goal to his name but the buildup was all down to Romelu Lukaku’s brilliance. The towering Belgian hardly had any major involvement in the game but he asserted his physical dominance against Burnley and released Martial on the left-hand channel with a well-worked pass.
Burnley soon began working in search of an equaliser and had it not been for the crossbar, the Clarets would have surely got one. Burnley were awarded a free-kick right outside the area and despite Steven Defour lining up, it was Berg Gudmundsson who struck it. The 27-year-old’s attempt, however, struck the post and the chance went begging.
Despite United enjoying a major share of possession, it was Burnley who attempted more shots and had more corners in their kitty. Furthermore, United had a lot of hopes on Jesse Lingard, who came on from the bench to score two against Burnley at Old Trafford, and the English international even came close to scoring, only to be denied by his poor judgement. The result? This is how the fans reacted:
Oi, that Willian goal was pure flith today, maybe some day, Jesse Lingard will be good enough to lace Willian’s boots.

Mourinho rolling lingard back onto the pitch after the worst dive/rolling over ever is probably the highlight of today

Nah, play Sanchez in Lingard’s position and let Mata and Lingard fight for the right wing for now…

Jose Mourinho rolling an injured Jesse Lingard back onto the pitch to stop the game, is truly disgusting. Not only is it abysmal cheating but dangerous for the player if they were in fact injured. @FA @premierleague something needs to be done!!

My MOTM today is Lukaku was our best player today easily, Jones 2nd and Martial third. Mata and Lingard with horrible games today not in keeping with their recent form

He’s off form , lingard had his time, martial enjoying his. Jose said in training he gets the goals, but on the pitch it just doesn’t work out.. the best way to get back his form is to continue using him
