Manchester United are all set to enter fresh contract talks with David de Gea to ward off interest from potential suitors. The Sun quotes that the Spaniard would become one of the highest paid players at the club if the terms are agreed.

Manchester United are keenly working on the prospect of tying De Gea to a long-term deal and in doing so, they are ready to make him one of the top earners at Old Trafford. The Spaniard’s current contract runs until the summer of 2019 and beyond that, the club have an option of extending it by another year. Real Madrid have long been the admirers of the Spaniard and even came close to signing him.

Back in the summer of 2015, it was reported that United have reached an agreement worth £29million, including the part-exchange of fellow goalkeeper Keylor Navas. The deal, however, famously collapsed in the final minutes as both Manchester United and Real Madrid failed to finalise the paperwork for the stopper. After the transfer window (September 2015), De Gea ended up signing a new four-year with the Devils.

With his performances becoming perfect year after year, United fear that Real would again make a move in the summer and to avoid any mishap, they have decided to hand him a new long-term and lucrative contract. The Sun claims that Manchester United’s management are ready to take his wages from £210,000-a-week to £300,000-a-week and if agreed, he will be on level terms with Paul Pogba.

The Spaniard will also become the highest earning goalkeeper in the history. The aforementioned source says that the hierarchy are looking to offer him anything up to a five-year deal. The talks are yet to begin but it is understood that the club are keen on concluding this speculation before the stopper travels to Russia for the FIFA World Cup.

“The club are finally going to kick-start contract talks with David very soon,” a source close to United was quoted as saying by The Sun.

“There were hints of talks in the summer but formal discussions had not yet started, it was just a matter of time.

“There is no problem and the money men are committed to tying him down for the long-term,” the source explained. “He is probably the best and most important player at the club and there is no chance we want to lose him.”

It would be a massive move from United to tie De Gea down to a new deal as it is really important that De Gea stays at Old Trafford for many more years to come.
