Manchester United have a “very good chance” of signing Arsenal star Mesut Ozil in the summer, according to Sky Sports news reporter Kaveh Solhekol. The Red Devils have been linked with a move to sign the World Cup winner in the January transfer window.
Ozil, 29, could be on his way to Old Trafford for a reunion with Jose Mourinho, having worked together at Real Madrid before his move to Arsenal in 2013.
Mourinho could sign Ozil in the January transfer window or wait until the summer when the German will be available on a free transfer.
Sky Sports News reporter Solhekol believes Ozil is likely to move to Manchester United in the summer.
“In the summer, there is a very good chance [Ozil could go to Man United], especially with his relationship with Mourinho in the past,” Solhekol told the Transfer Talk podcast on Sky Sports, as reported by The Sport Review.
Ozil has been in fine form in recent weeks scoring 4 goals and 5 assists in his last 10 appearances in all competitions. But the 29-year-old midfielder missed Sunday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom Albion due to a knee problem and is a big doubt for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against London rivals Chelsea.
Mourinho has been increasingly vocal of late about his need to invest further in his squad despite spending big since moving to United.
He has spent heavily to sign Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, while Nemanja Matic, Victor Lindelof, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly have also arrived under the ex-Chelsea boss’ stewardship. However, we have struggled to compete with cross-town rivals Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who are seemingly running away with the Premier League title.
A 2-0 win over Everton on Monday moved United back into 2nd place and 12 points behind City, but our rivals have a game in hand. The United boss has hinted that the club may be active in the January transfer market after all following a spate of injuries.
The Portuguese was missing a host of players for the game against Everton, including strikers Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, midfielders Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick, with Ashley Young also beginning a three-game suspension.
We have lacked a quality creator apart from Pogba and Mata. Mesut Ozil would be an absolute steal should we get him in the summer for free.
