Jose Mourinho’s interest in signing Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann has not gone away, and that is according to La Liga expert Guillem Balague.
Manchester United were firmly linked with Griezmann over the summer transfer window and Mourinho, on his part, even reportedly spoke with the Frenchman about the potential move to the Old Trafford. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, accepted the fact that Griezmann is on the verge of leaving, hence they quickly accepted personal terms with then Lyon striker, Alexandre Lacazette.
However, with the Los Rojiblancos failing in their attempt to lift the transfer ban, everything went down the drain and Griezmann eventually stayed put, while Lacazette moved to Arsenal. Same is not the case this time around, however, as Atletico have signed Diego Costa from Chelsea.
And with that being done, Guillem Balague has quoted that Mourinho’s interest in Griezmann has not died, over the months, and while a January move is not considered by anybody, an official bid next summer window can well and truly be on the cards.
“So what’s next for him? Atletico supporters are excited to see him partner Diego Costa, who will finally be available to play next month, Balague told Sky Sports.
“And while a January departure is not being considered by anybody, the club accept that this will probably be his last season with them. He was on his way out last summer. Manchester United made a huge offer and Griezmann spoke to Jose Mourinho directly.
“But much to their surprise, he eventually chose to remain loyal to Atletico. United’s interest in Griezmann has not gone away.
“But they might now face competition from Barcelona and even PSG, who have made him one of their primary targets.
“It will be fascinating to see what happens next. After a difficult start to the campaign, Griezmann’s return to form is a timely reminder of why he is one of the most in-demand players around.”
However, this time around, Manchester United won’t be the only interest party, as the likes of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have entered the fray as well. And if the reports are to be believed, both these European giants have made Griezmann their top target. Meanwhile, for Griezmann, his start to the new season was utterly poor, hence many experts questioned his consistency. The Frenchman, however, found a footing and eventually returned to his usual self and now has 5 goals and 3 assists in his bag from 12 La Liga fixtures.
Would you be okay with Griezmann’s arrival at Old Trafford?
