Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is keeping the club guessing as talks of his future keep circling the rumour mills. The Belgian is out of contract at Old Trafford next summer and is showing little signs of signing the new deal that has been put forth by the Red Devils.
There have been reports all through the last couple of months indicating that the midfielder could plot his way out of the club. And, according to the latest reports, that exit door could potentially link him with his former mentor David Moyes.
Moyes and Fellaini go back a long time as it was the Scot who brought the Belgian to England by signing him for Everton. It was at the Goodison Park that Fellaini earned a name as a menace to the opposition defenders with his robust displays.
Once Moyes was signed as the United boss, Fellaini was brought to the club but that was where the honeymoon ended. The Scot had a torrid time at Old Trafford and as I remember it, that was a disastrous tenure.
Unluckily for Fellaini, he was viewed by many fans as a symbol of everything that went wrong under Moyes. The Belgian too struggled to settle down under the weight of expectations and the transfer fee that he commanded. The exit of Moyes turned the tide for Fellaini, who improved under Louis van Gaal. But, it was under Jose Mourinho that Fellaini started showing his true potential.
I wouldn’t say he is a purist’s delight, but he is definitely Mourinho’s player. Jose believes that Fellaini adds a new dimension to his side that is bristling with creativity, flair, and pace elsewhere.
That should explain why Mourinho was keen on extending the stay of Fellaini. The Belgian, on his part, has kept postponing the decision – probably to move closer to the exit door.
Now with Moyes back in management, with him having taken charge of the struggling West Ham United side, the rumours are back, linking the duo. Ladbrokes has placed Fellaini at odds of 7/2 to make a move to West Ham and work again with Moyes.
He is just behind Jack Rodwell and Victor Anichebe on the list of potential targets for Moyes.
What’s your opinion? I think that the link is quite natural considering Fellaini’s contract situation. Let’s hope he stays at Old Trafford.
