Manchester United are preparing a £100million move for French striker Antoine Griezmann next summer, according to Starsport (h/t Daily Star).
The Red Devils made the Atletico Madrid superstar their top priority in the summer transfer window but were unsuccessful in their pursuit. It wasn’t because of a lack of intent from the club or lack of interest from the player that the move hasn’t happened yet.
In fact, the striker was also keen to join Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford that would have given him the iconic number 7 shirt at the club. The reason why Griezmann decided to stay with Atletico was their transfer ban.
Once the ban was upheld and Atletico were unable to sign any replacements, Griezmann decided to stay loyal to the club. He even signed an extension with the club, shutting all the rumours of his move to United.
It is believed that the 26-year-old is still keen on a move to work under Mourinho. The club too value his signature and have been reported to return next summer. Atletico are interested in Diego Costa of Chelsea with the striker too keen on a return to the club.
If that happens, Griezmann should be ready to make the move to United and take the number 7 shirt that was worn by legends at the club like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo in the past.
After Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid, that shirt is still looking for a worthy player. If you ask United fans, the majority of them would vouch for Griezmann as their choice.
How viable can this signing be? It is a well-known secret that the player was angling for a move to Old Trafford and that should keep United in the driving seat come January.
Griezmann would be a perfect addition to our ranks and is someone who can handle the pressure of being Manchester United’s No.7. The hunt for our No.7 has been going on for a while now and it is high time we sign Griezmann and end the search once and for all.
