It was a name that started the summer transfer window for Manchester United; and by the looks of it, it could be the name that could end the transfer window! And if it happens, the buzz at Old Trafford would be breathtaking.
We are talking about the transfer of Antoine Griezmann. The latest news coming from the Spanish outlet Don Balon (h/t Manchester Evening News) suggest that the 26-year-old could make a last minute move to United after becoming upset with Atletico.
The French striker was touted as a strong possibility to be joining Jose Mourinho earlier in the summer with personal terms reportedly having been agreed between United and the player.
However, things did not go according to plan and Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban for breaching the regulations was upheld. That brought a change of heart from the player as Griezmann felt it would be embarrassing to leave the club when they are in trouble.
Atletico would have been unable to block Griezmann if United had triggered his release clause – like Paris Saint-Germain did with Neymar – but the French international did not want leave under a cloud of negativity.
The saga ended with United reportedly willing to wait until next summer to make a fresh move for the striker. Griezmann eventually signed a new contract with Atletico, which made him the highest paid player ever in the club’s illustrious history.
Fresh Twist
Diego Simeone’s men were unable to land their prime target – Chelsea’s Diego Costa – this summer. The Spanish international was frozen out of action by Chelsea and is contemplating legal action against the Blues to force his move to Atletico.
That makes his signing almost near-impossible before the transfer window closes this month and Griezmann is further worried about the club after reports that ‘keeper Jan Oblak could be a target for Paris Saint-Germain.
The Slovenian goalkeeper has been one of the strongest performers on the world scenes. If Simeone allows Oblak to move, that could reignite Griezmann’s interest. Don Balon (h/t M.E.N) reports that United offer is still on the table and Griezmann could be swayed into a deal depending on Oblak’s move.
What do you think? Is Griezmann heading to Old Trafford?
