Midfielder Devonte Redmond has joined Scunthorpe United on loan from Manchester United. The report on BBC claims that the deal will keep the talented youngster at the League One club until January.
The 20-year-old youngster is rated very highly within Old Trafford and recently returned from the Under-23 pre-season trip to Austria. He is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Red Devils but is a regular at the youth level for the club.
From Scunthorpe’s point of view, this is the fifth signing of the summer so far, in what has been a very busy start for them. They have already recruited Belgian midfielder Funso Ojo, defenders Rory McArdle and Cameron Burgess to go with the signing of goalkeeper Matt Gilks.
The 2017-18 League One season for Scunthorpe begins next weekend, with the Irons facing AFC Wimbledon. Redmond has been handed the number 18 jersey and will make his debut for his new club in the final pre-season game against Luton Town on Saturday.
What Does Redmond Bring To Scunthorpe?
As their manager Graham Alexander indicated, the youngster has loads of energy and can pass the ball equally well with both feet. He caught the eye as a powerful but skilful midfielder for the Under-18 and Under-23 teams at Old Trafford.
This will be his first spell away from Manchester United for the youngster, after joining the club in 2013. The Mancunian born midfielder will surely benefit from his stint with Scunthorpe.
What Does This Mean For United?
There is optimism within Old Trafford management that Redmond will soon grow to be an important first-team player. For now, he is way below the pecking order and his chances of getting a game even in the League Cup look scarce.
In this scenario, it is important that he goes on a loan spell to gain some vital game time. If he can utilise his time at Scunthorpe and return as a much-improved player, he can soon become a vital player for the Red Devils.
