Anthony Martial has rejected claims that he is on the verge of a move to Arsenal (Daily Telegraph). The Manchester United forward does not seem to have a great future at Old Trafford, as he has failed to sufficiently impress manager Jose Mourinho in the last 12 months. There were rumours about Martial going to Sevilla even as early as in January, but that did not materialize since United were not prepared to decrease the strength in the offensive areas of the pitch.
The Frenchman’s last season was a major disappointment after impressing heavily in his debut campaign following his transfer from Monaco in 2015. He has been one of the expensive purchases by United as his total cost has now escalated to €60 million after all the bonuses.
Yet, he has come in with a return of just eight goals and eight assists in 42 appearances across all competitions last season. One of the reasons for this poor goal return was the 21-year-old being shunted out wide more often than not. Martial has not been used as a centre-forward most of the time, and this has really affected his goal return. Still only 21 years old, Manchester United will have every reason to believe that the forward will eventually come good.
However, it has not prevented rumours about the player’s future being thrown about on all fronts. The latest rumour has seen him linked with a move to Arsenal, who are in the market for a new centre forward (Daily Mail). It is not surprising that he becomes the umpteenth French player to be linked with a move to Arsenal since Arsene Wenger came to the club. Yet, Martial has poured cold water on such a deal by clarifying the rumours on his Twitter account.
Les rumeurs sont fausses

Martial only has a contract until June 2019, but United do have the option of extending the contract by another year. The full complement of performance related bonuses have not been paid and the transfer fee for the 21-year-old could increase even further. Arsenal have already signed a Manchester United forward in the form of Danny Welbeck, who has been reasonably good whenever he has played. However, Martial is keen on improving his doubters wrong by staying at Old Trafford.
United have not been able to sign any striker so far in this summer, and this will only increase the necessity for Martial to remain at the club.
