Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes might be on the move just a year after joining the Catalan club, as interest from the likes of Juventus and Manchester United has grown considerably in the last few days. The player’s agent Jorge Mendes has reportedly been spotted holding talks with Barcelona officials, according to a report on Mundo Deportivo.
Gomes came to the club as a €35 million (plus €20 million in add-ons) signing from Valencia last summer. However, he failed to secure a regular first-team spot at the club even though he made 30 appearances in the league. Most of his appearances were as a substitute.
Just when it seemed like the second season at the club would be a lot easier in terms of first-team opportunities, Barcelona have undergone a managerial change, with Luis Enrique being replaced by former Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde. This brings about a substantial change with regard to the philosophy at the club. The new manager is understood to be keen on signing several new targets – especially in the midfield, so much so that even the legendary Andres Iniesta might go out in the summer transfer window.
Gomes is understood to be deeply concerned about his first-team opportunities under the new regime and he is prepared to go elsewhere in search of regular first-team football. There is no shortage of interest surrounding the 23-year-old, who is capable of dominating the centre of the park in any team. Juventus and Manchester United are the two teams fighting for his signature.
The role played by Jorge Mendes could be crucial in securing a move away from the Camp Nou, as the Portuguese super-agent also manages Jose Mourinho amongst many other stars in the world. Mourinho is keen on strengthening the midfield at United, and he could use the links with Jorge Mendes in order to convince the player about a move to Old Trafford. United are in need of a central midfielder who can go on and replace Michael Carrick once the England international leaves the club.
