The hunt for a centre-half seems to continue as Manchester United have now been linked with Real Madrid star Raphael Varane. United have been linked with a lot of centre-backs in recent times, with reports about a deal completed for £35m for Victor Lindelof also emerging earlier (Daily Mail). Now the Red Devils have been linked with Varane.
According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are interested in signing Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, who joined the Spanish outfit during Jose Mourinho’s time as Madrid boss. Varane has managed to establish himself as one of the key members of the Real Madrid squad since then.
However, it now looks like a re-union could be on the cards, with Jose Mourinho interested in bringing the Frenchman to Old Trafford.
The report also claims that Mourinho has three other defenders as possible targets alongside Varane – with Virgil van Dijk of Southampton, Burnley’s Michael Keane, and Victor Lindelof of Benfica being the targets. It is also claimed that Mourinho is interested in Varane’s colleague at Real Madrid, Alvaro Morata, who he sees as a perfect candidate to lead the line for United next season as Zlatan Ibrahimovic continues his rehabilitation from knee surgery.
Manchester United finished the league season with the 2nd best defensive record in the entire division, having conceded just 29 goals all campaign. It was bettered only by runners-up Tottenham Hotspur, who conceded just 26 goals all season (in league games).
Despite this impressive defensive record, Jose Mourinho seems keen on bringing in more defensive strength and it is something that needs to be appreciated. This is the kind of ambition that is required at Old Trafford. Our transfer activities have always been positive and exciting, and this summer is going to be no different either!
