Manchester United have received a major boost in the pursuit of midfielder Blaise Matuidi, as the Paris St Germain star has admitted that he does not know if he would remain at the French club beyond the summer. Matuidi has been one of the integral parts of the PSG team over the last couple of years. However, he is widely expected to be sold in the summer, as the club undergo vast changes in terms of the playing squad. Successive disappointments in the Champions League mean that the midfielder has had to bear some of the blame.

It seems that the beast midfielder has had a change of mind at 30 years of age. He is on the lookout for a new challenge, as Matuidi is aware that interest from the top clubs will decrease beyond this stage. His career has been reasonably successful with four French championship medals, three French cup titles, and four French League Cup victories. Yet, he has not been able to win some of the top honours on European stage like the Champions League, or even the Europa League. He said (original source: leparisien.fr)

“I don’t know yet. I am feeling good in Paris. It’s hard as you don’t know the real position of the club.

“I am feeling good in Paris. Even if in the future I should leave, Paris stays the club of my heart and it would always be like that.”

After having spent more than six years at Paris St Germain, Matuidi appears to be on the lookout for a new challenge. PSG will have no issues in letting the player leave the club, as his contract comes to an end in June 2018. Aware that the player might be able to leave on a free transfer next season and that his transfer value will also plummet over the course of the next 12 months, PSG may be ready to accept a reasonable offer that may come their way. This factor is also a reason behind Manchester United’s interest, as the club are setting aside the big budgets for forwards like Antoine Griezmann and Romelu Lukaku.

Jose Mourinho has spent a huge sum of money in improving the midfield over the last 12 months. The likes of Paul Pogba and Henrik Mkhitaryan represent a huge addition to the squad in this position. As a result, the club should go for an experienced, yet potentially inexpensive option in the form of Matuidi. The midfielder made 52 appearances last season and scored seven goals.

Manchester United may have recently activated a new one-year extension in the contract of Carrick, but the club are aware that they need to find a replacement for the ageing warhorse. That process could begin even in the summer, as Matuidi is more than capable of substituting Carrick in the centre of the United midfield.
