Smalling and Jones among the players offered to Aston Villa

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has announced that he has come to a decision on his future. As expected, the England captain is not short of offers but there is growing expectation that the striker may end up remaining at Old Trafford next campaign. After having been on the sidelines for much of the season, Rooney found himself back in the team for the last few weeks of the season. It remains to be seen if this would have been sufficient to convince the player to remain at the club for another season.

There have been widespread reports about Chinese Super League clubs offering the player in excess of £1million per WEEK in order to move to China. This would represent a fourfold increase on his current contract which is worth around £250,000 per week. After having made several hundred millions over the course of his career, Rooney may not exactly be tempted by the prospect of another hundred million, compared to winning major honours by being at the top of the game. Still only 31 years old, Rooney will not be short of offers even when it comes to the Premier League.

If we had failed to qualify for the Champions League next season, Jose Mourinho might actually have persuaded the player to remain at the club considering that attracting the best players would have been slightly more difficult. However, now that Champions League football is assured, Mourinho may go on a spending spree. A lot of world-class strikers have been linked with us over the course of the season.

Besides, the club are also looking to strengthen in the defence department with a lot of top talents being linked with a move. Such an extravagant summer spree will once again leave Rooney farther away from the first-team action.

A major sign of Rooney being close to announcing his departure from United is the player being left out of the national team squad. The striker, who has the record number of goals for the national team, faces the prospect of never being recalled to the national team. He said:

“There are lots of offers on the table, both in England and abroad, and that’s what I have to decide on. I’ve got some decisions to make now over the next few weeks so I will talk with my family and then I’ll decide.”

Rooney scored only 5 goals in the Premier league in 25 appearances this season. In the final 10 matches when he received the most outings in the first team, Rooney only scored 3 goals. After having enjoyed a 13-year spell at the club, Rooney may finally be on his way towards a new challenge.
