Manchester United are aware of the growing interest surrounding Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea. Real Madrid have been courting the goalkeeper for the last few years, and it seems that they may come again with a bid this summer. United, though, are ready to give up on the fight, as they have replacements lined up already.
To replace someone like De Gea is not an easy job. Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak is one of the frequently linked players, but United are aware that Atletico will demand a huge transfer fee (Source: Daily Star) in order to let the 24-year-old leave. It looks like they may opt for a cheaper option in the name of Ederson.
According to manchestereveningnews, Manchester United are targeting a move for Benfica goalkeeper Ederson, if Atletico make unrealistic demands for Oblak. Ederson has become one of the top goalkeepers in European football fully his exploits with Benfica. Manchester City are also taking a good look at the player in order to sign him as a replacement for Claudio Bravo. The 23-year-old has been the first choice goalkeeper for Benfica since last year. He has been able to make 27 appearances in the current campaign in order to help Benfica win the league title.
One of the main factors that would make Manchester United is likely candidates to sign Ederson is the player shares the same agent as Jose Mourinho – Jorge Mendes. Jose Mourinho, though, was confident about David de Gea remaining at the club next season. After the goalless draw with Southampton, he claimed that the Spaniard is expected to be available for the first pre-season game against LA Galaxy. However, De Gea has clearly played his last game this season. Joel Pereira played his part in the game against Crystal Palace, while Sergio Romero will play in the Europa League final against Ajax on May 24.
The decision to keep De Gea out of these two important games is a sign that all is not well in the camp.
Even though United have been linked with several Benfica players in the past like Javi Garcia, Victor Lindelof, Renato Sanches, and Nico Gaitan, they have not brought in any player from this club.
