Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho reportedly (Manchester Evening News) wants to reunite with former colleague Nemanja Matic, after accepting difficulty in luring Eric Dier away from Tottenham. Manchester United have repeatedly been linked with moves for central midfielders, given the departure of Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger. Michael Carrick is getting no younger as well and United certainly need some reinforcements in the central midfield department.

Eric Dier was believed to be on Mourinho’s wish list and now it looks like the Portuguese has accepted the difficulty involved in signing Dier from Tottenham. Spurs have a well-settled squad and the core team has just begun its journey, after challenging for the title in the past two seasons. So it is possible that Pochettino might not want to sell one of his most important players.

Moreover, Tottenham are set to move to their new stadium and it would be difficult for them to spend money and buy new players. It is no guarantee that they’d be able to replace a player of Dier’s quality and they are likely to not risk spoiling their team chemistry.

Chelsea, on the other hand, appointed Antonio Conte in the summer and have already sealed the league title. However, it is a squad that he inherited from Jose Mourinho and it is possible that he might freshen things up a little. Now according to Manchester Evening News, Mourinho is ready to drop his interest in Eric Dier and pursue Nemanja Matic instead.

Nemanja Matic has been a key member of the title-winning Chelsea squad under Antonio Conte and has been solid in the middle alongside N’Golo Kante – the PFA Player of the Year. Matic is considered a more attainable target in the summer when Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is expected to make significant additions to his Premier League title winners.

Mourinho is reportedly set to spend in the region of £200m on a squad that will finish 6th this season after completing their final league game of the season. This season has seen Manchester United record their lowest ever win total in the Premier League era.

Do you think Matic is a better prospect than the £40m rated 0E0ric Dier?
