Manchester United have dropped a big hint that goalkeeper David de Gea will remain at the club next season after featuring the star in the unveiling of the 2017-18 away kit.
Manchester United’s away kit is the latest designed by Adidas and it features a throwback into the class of 92’s iconic shirt. While most Manchester United fans have been left impressed with this new shirt design, one key aspect has caught the attention of many. Despite being linked heavily with a move to Real Madrid, De Gea was seen in the promotional videos that unveiled the kit. This is seen as a major sign that United see the player remaining at the club next season.
Other players who featured in the unveiling are Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney, and Ander Herrera. This presents confusion at the same time, as Rooney is widely expected to leave the club in the summer after falling down the pecking order at Manchester United.
Even after the injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the England captain has not been the first choice. However, he has featured heavily in the games against Burnley, Swansea, and Arsenal. There are signs of Rooney rediscovering his goal-scoring touch after scoring two goals in his last three matches. However, much of the 22 appearances in the Premier League have been from the bench. Rooney was extremely close to joining the Chinese Super League in January. It would not be surprising if similar transfer rumours cropped up in the summer.
While it is certainly possible David de Gea’s situation could still change if Madrid meet the reported £60 million demanded by Manchester United for the player, it looks highly unlikely for now. De Gea has been linked with a move to Madrid for the last three years. Even though the transfer rumours initially died down after he signed a new contract back in 2015, they have once again resurfaced considering that De Gea’s contract runs out in the summer of June 2019. The two-year period is seen as a crucial position when it comes to the contracts of top players.
Madrid seem to have cooled their interest in the player after being left surprised with the transfer fee and wage demands. Apart from costing £60 million just in transfer fees, De Gea is reportedly demanding the same £200,000 per week in wages that he makes it Manchester United.
However, the Spanish goalkeeper being included in the unveiling of the new kit seems to have put the rumours to rest for now and United fans can breathe a sigh of relief as their star man may not be leaving after all.
