Manchester United Injury News
Manchester United have suffered a major blow after winger Ashley Young has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign due to a hamstring injury. The worst was feared for the club when the former England international went off from the game against Celta de Vigo in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final. He seemed to have suffered a hamstring injury, but the extent of the problem was not clear straight away. Young came close to leaving the club in January, but the departures of Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay, and Bastian Schweinsteiger put the club in a difficult position with regards to the squad depth. The winger was persuaded to stay at Old Trafford at least until the summer. The Versatile star’s ability to play in the wingback or even left back positions was of huge benefit to Jose Mourinho, who has had severe problems with the availability of Luke Shaw. Most of the 31-year-old’s 12 Premier league appearances have come in the last few weeks.
Now, he may have effectively played his last game for the club with this latest injury. Young is out of contract in June 2018 and there has already been a lot of interest from several Premier League clubs to sign him on a permanent basis. There is also interest from the Chinese Super League, where Young could fill his wallet without breaking any sweat.
The news of the injury is a major blow for manager Jose Mourinho, has already been suffering from a string of injuries at the worst possible time in the campaign. Despite securing a 1-0 win over Celta de Vigo in the first leg of the semi-final United still have to do a job in the second leg at Old Trafford. The Europa League is now the best route for United to feature in the Champions League group stages next season.
If not, the club face the possibility of their mega sponsorship deal with Adidas being cut 30% or around £ 20 million per season. This is in addition to the £30-£40 million loss in revenue that the club would face for not appearing in the Champions League group games. The biggest impact, though, will be with regard to signing the best players in the world, as they would want to play regularly in the Champions League.
After suffering a 2-0 loss against Arsenal last weekend, United are up against Tottenham in the final match at White Hart Lane this weekend.
