Manchester United have reportedly (ESPN) been offered the chance to sign James Rodriguez from Real Madrid. The Colombian star has been unsettled at the Santiago Bernabeu for quite a while. While there have been reports (Donbalon) about United being involved in a swap deal that would see David de Gea going the other way, it appears that Madrid are intent on selling the player even if the goalkeeper does not come in the summer.

The failure to sign De Gea is unlikely to prevent Rodriguez from leaving the club in the summer, as the Colombian seems to have made up his mind along with Madrid to end the run. Despite superstar Gareth Bale being hit by numerous injuries this season, Rodriguez has been able to cement a first-team spot under Zinedine Zidane. Incredibly, Rodriguez was by no means a cheap transfer as he cost the club an incredible £ 71 million when he made the switch from Monaco in the summer of 2014.

His failure to establish a first-team spot at Madrid is surprising, and the club seems to have come to the idea of letting the player go in search of regular first-team action rather than keeping an unhappy name in the dressing room.

Chelsea, Paris St Germain, and Liverpool are some of the clubs interested in signing the player, but Manchester United are in desperate need of a top centre-forward. At 25 years of age, Rodriguez will tick a lot of boxes for the Red Devils. Considering that Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid will cost a hefty transfer fee, Rodriguez represents a nice little bargain. United have watched Griezmann’s form dropped drastically in the last couple of months. After having scored almost a goal per game up until January, Griezmann has scored just three goals in his last 10 appearances for Atletico.

United are in the need for a new centre-forward for sure as Zlatan Ibrahimovic may not stay at the club beyond the campaign after suffering a serious knee injury, while Wayne Rooney’s departure from the club was written almost 6 months ago.
