Manchester United’s season might all come down to the Europa League after their 2-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal. The Red Devils aren’t in pole position to move into the top four and must win the Europa League in hopes of playing in the Champions League next season.
Even with their European commitments in doubt, the Red Devils are planning for next season and The Times (Subscription required) claim that Jose Mourinho wants to sign Sergio Aguero from Manchester City. The Sun adds that the United boss is ready to pay as much as £55m for the Argentine.
The report claims that the Red Devils want a top No.9 next season and with Zlatan Ibrahimovic all but sure of leaving the club due to his injury, Jose Mourinho will go all out to sign the Argentine striker.
It won’t be easy to sign Aguero from their City rivals as Pep Guardiola might try to cancel the deal but we have seen Carlos Tevez swap clubs, even though the circumstances of his move were different from Aguero’s when he left United.
Aguero is one of the best strikers in the Premier League but he was dropped to the bench when the former Barcelona manager preferred new signing Gabriel Jesus up top. There were claims that Aguero couldn’t fit into a Guardiola system and the Argentine was unhappy at his lack of playing time for the Etihad based side.
The 28-year-old Argentine still has scored 28 times for the side in all competitions this season as he looks to confirm City’s position in the top four. Aguero’s contract with the Sky Blues also expires in 2019 and if United are to sign him up, they might have to pay around €80 million, which is the CIES Football Observatory’s valuation of the Argentine.
United only have Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney as their fit strikers at the moment and Aguero joining the side would certainly give them a lot of bite up front. Mourinho has pulled out some big deals at United and if he does want Aguero, Ed Woodward will have to pull all the stops to ensure it happens.
