Concerns have been growing about the future of goalkeeper David De Gea after he was a surprise omission from the 3-0 win over Sunderland last weekend. After having been the first choice goalkeeper in the league games, it was a surprise to see Sergio Romero in goal for the game against Sunderland. Manager Jose Mourinho claimed that the Spanish goalkeeper was struggling with a minor hip problem.

Reports claim as well that the goalkeeper was left out due to an injury problem. José Mourinho has also categorically denied selling the Spaniard, stating that he would like to keep the player at Old Trafford. This stance appears to displease the goalkeeper.

Real Madrid though, have not given up hope of signing David de Gea, who has been one of the long-standing transfer targets. The club have been keen on signing the former Atletico Madrid player for at least three years now. Back in 2015, De Gea came close to leaving the club only to make a U-turn and sign a long-term contract with United. The contract will expire in the summer of 2019 and Madrid camp have reportedly received positive signs from De Gea about the possibility of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu. Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is clearly unhappy with the goalkeeping performances of Keylor Navas, and he has urgently put forth the requirement of a top-class goalkeeper.

Mourinho claimed after the Sunderland game that he expected De Gea to return to the first team for the match against Chelsea. It remains to be seen if the 26-year-old Spaniard will make this return. Since his transfer from Atletico Madrid for around £18 million, De Gea has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. Incredibly, he has been playing in England for five years after having moved in the summer of 2011. This time around, United are unlikely to stand in the way of De Gea, although this does not appear to be the case with Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese is one of the first to know the importance of a top-class goalkeeper when it comes to challenging for top honours. He has been able to manage some of the best goalkeepers in the world like Petr Cech. Mourinho is expected to retain Sergio Romero for the midweek Europa League game against Anderlecht.
