Mourinho Keen To Land £30m Attacker – Has Already Sent Scouts To Watch Him In Action

Manchester United have reportedly scouted Dries Mertens this past weekend during Napoli’s win over Lazio. Mertens has been a revelation this season after settling down well to a change in role as a centre-forward this season. He has flourished as a striker this season and has 26 goals to his name.

He has also provided 12 assists and has played 39 games, with 25 of them coming in a centre-forward position. His performances have not gone unnoticed and it has been reported by The Sun that the Manchester United scouts were present to watch Mertens in action against Lazio.

The 29-year old seems to be at the peak of his abilities and hence it is not surprising to know that United are watching the player. Mertens, who has a £30m release clause, can also play as a No.10 or on either side of the midfield.

Clearly, Manchester United have craved for backup in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season and luckily so, Rashford has managed to handle the pressure that has been thrown at him. United have also fallen short on numbers in wide areas and hence scouting Dries Mertens seems to be a sensible thing to do.

Our Verdict

It was also earlier reported by The Sun that the player had held talks with the Manchester United officials. However, it is hard to understand why a club would ‘scout’ a player after ‘holding talks’ with. It is quite logical to believe that a club would only hold talks with a player if they are satisfied with the player’s performances.

Nevertheless, ignoring the authenticity of the news, an application of some sensible opinion would help us arrive at a logical conclusion. And surely, it would be that Manchester United need some attacking reinforcement. Rather than going for an out and out winger or a striker, it would make sense for United to move for someone who is as versatile as Mertens.

Arsenal did the same last summer by signing Lucas Perez (whether they have played him or not is a different question altogether) and United can probably do the same by signing Mertens and utilise him properly and get the best out of him.
