Jose Mourinho To Revamp The Squad With A £72 Million Raid For A Super Trio

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on going after three Monaco players in a bid to bolster his squad for the next campaign. Despite having spent big on several new players, it looks like the club would be missing out on Champions League football once again. In order to revamp the squad, Mourinho has identified not one but three Monaco players as potential transfer targets for the summer. Tiemoue Bakayoko, Benjamin Mendy, and Djibril Sidibe are the three players at the top of the United wish list.

The club set out with the task of winning the Premier League, which did not seem improbable given the raft of new signings and the presence of Jose Mourinho. However, they have not even been able to stay in the top four for long. As a result, United are looking set to miss out on Champions League through a Premier league finish; they can still qualify for the competition by winning the Europa League.

Bakayoko had caught the attention of United several months ago. Apart from the Red Devils, a number of top European clubs are also showing interest in the defensive midfielder, who had an excellent game in the two legs against Tottenham earlier in the Europa League campaign. Spurs are also credited with interest the player, who could cost as much as £35 million. After the departure of Morgan Schneiderlin and the need to replace Michael Carrick, United could go after Bakayoko to bring more solidity in the midfield.

Benjamin Mendy has been at Monaco only since the summer after having from Marseille for around €13 million. Yet, he has been one of the crucial factors behind the club making a tilt for the French Ligue 1 title. Mendy will be another attractive buy for United considering that he is only 22 years old. He has played in 21 league matches for Monaco. Even though he has not scored yet, Mendy has contributed five assists in these matches. Given that he is a new signing, it is highly unlikely that Monaco will be interested in the possibility of letting Mendy go unless they receive three times as much they paid for him.

Sidibe is likely to be a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia, who has been the club’s default right back this season. However, there are concerns about the longevity of the player, despite being a recently awarded with a one-year contract extension. Valencia will soon be turning 32 years of age and his impact on the team is likely to diminish. Timothy Fosu-Mensah has so far failed to get a look in under Mourinho this season.
