Manchester City were eliminated from the Champions League last-16 stage on Wednesday night as AS Monaco beat them 3-1 in the second leg to progress to the quarterfinals of the premier European event.
City had won the first leg at The Etihad by a 5-3 margin and were hoping to make it to the quarterfinals as they travelled to France. However, their hope did not last too long as Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring, 7 minutes into the game. Boom!
Monaco doubled their lead through Fabinho, who popped up inside the box to slot home a low cross from Benjamin Mendy. It was virtually over. However, after being invisible for 70 minutes, City did manage to pull one back and go ahead on aggregate. However, it did not last too long, as Monaco made full use of a set-piece routine and scored the 3rd and decisive goal. It was Bakayoko who headed the ball home and Monaco looked assured of kicking City out of Champions League.
The aftermath was horrible for Manchester City and their fans as Pep’s side were so confident of progressing to the quarterfinals after their first leg victory over the French club.
It is always a great feeling to watch the rivals suffer defeats, isn’t it? And Twitteratis rejoiced City’s exit from Champions League, much to United fans’ delight.
Here are few hilarious responses from Twitter, to City’s exit from Champions League.

Time to sack #Guardiola? Or will @ManCity be sensible enough to give him time to mesh with English football? Either way, works for me.

This burn though!
Three things Manchester City don’t have:
One’s a Champions League Trophy, two’s a Kompany, three’s a crowd

Now that Manchester City have been eliminated in the round of 16, they’ve made the UCL Quarter Finals as many times as Leicester City; once.

Quite ironic that Manchester City have spent an absolute fortune on defenders, but still can’t defend. Hopeless mess.

It looks like it will take centuries for Manchester City to reach the levels of the mighty Red Devils. Until then, mind the gap!
