Manchester United Transfer News

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has given the club the go-ahead to offer second-choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero a rise in pay. Romero has long been linked with a move away from the Manchester club. However, according to Clubcall, Romero is set to be offered a pay rise by the club and put all the exit rumours to bed.

Jose Mourinho insisted in January that David De Gea and Sergio Romero are not leaving the club when he was questioned about Romero being linked with a move to Boca Juniors.

He said: “What I can say is that I expect both to stay because I think both are equally important. I cannot have a better goalkeeper than David, I cannot have a better replacement than Sergio. I cannot have a better professional than Sergio. I want them both to stay. So, if there is something true in relation to Boca, I will try to stop it because I want Sergio to stay.”

It now looks like his words are turning out to be true, with news about Romero’s contract extension emerging in the media.

It was also reported that Romero is currently on £60,000 a week – at the lower end of the first-team salary scale – and the 20-time English champions are now understood to be willing to offer him a decent hike to ensure he remains completely focused on proving an able back-up to David de Gea.

Romero has been brilliant for Manchester United whenever he has been given an opportunity to play. He has kept a total of 7 clean sheets in 9 games that he has played for Manchester United this season and has conceded just 2 goals. A majority of his appearances have come in UEFA Europa League, where he has played 5 games and has kept 5 clean sheets.

However, he hasn’t made a single league appearance for Jose Mourinho’s side and he would probably not worry too much about it as United are not in the title race. Manchester United have a big chance to go on and win Europa League and Romero will play a huge part in it for sure. The kind of form that he has been in when on the pitch will give Mourinho the full confidence to play him even in the later stages of the competition.

It is pretty much clear now, that Jose Mourinho has no intent of letting Sergio Romero leave the club. It would be really difficult for United to find a player so professional and talented like Sergio Romero.

It is a wise move by the club to offer Romero fresh terms!
