Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that the club should go after Sergio Aguero, even if he currently plays for their arch rivals, Manchester City. There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Aguero after he appears to have fallen out of favour in the regime of Guardiola. Despite being one of the top strikers in the history of the club, Aguero does not seem to fit in the plans of the former Barcelona manager. He has already been left out of the starting lineup for some key games this season. The arrival of Brazilian striker Jesus seems to have deemed him out of the starting line-up on a permanent basis.
Guardiola recently refused to confirm if Aguero would stay at the club beyond the summer. It has raised a lot of speculations that the Argentine forward will finally bring his spell in England to an end. Aguero scored arguably Manchester City’s important role to date in the 2011-12 season. He came up with an injury-time winner against QPR to give the club the first Premier League title. Since then, he has managed several trophies and honest with the blue of Manchester.
Very few players have made the switch between the two clubs with Carlos Tevez being the last of the high profile names to make the move from the right side of Manchester to the blue side. This saw him receive immense hatred from the United section. There can be little doubt that Aguero will also face a similar situation if he decides to make the move from Etihad stadium to Old Trafford. However, Scholes reckons that it will be a great fit for United considering that there are several doubts about players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney remaining at the club beyond the summer.
United will be in the market for a new centre-forward, and they have reportedly earmarked Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann as the primary signing in this regard. His recent comments appeared to backtrack on a potential move to Old Trafford. Hence, United will have to line up an alternate should they failed to get Griezmann and Scholes reckons that City’s goal machine will be a great fit. He said:
“A centre-forward to help Ibrahimovic. Griezmann – or Aguero wouldn’t be bad!
“We’ll have to see defensively when they play Tottenham, City, Chelsea and Arsenal. That will determine whether he needs a centre-half. Right-back, left-back not a problem.”
A top centre-forward is essential for any club looking to challenge for the league title. While possessing one of the world’s best midfielders in the form of Paul Pogba is well and good, it will be a goal scoring centre-forward who will decide games.
