Reports have emerged that Tottenham are looking to sign Luke Shaw from Manchester United this summer. A reliable source has told Yahoo Sports that Mauricio Pochettino is willing to offer Luke Shaw a route out of Old Trafford, after watching the England International struggle to break into the first team on a regular basis.
Shaw has not been the same player after his comeback from that horrific injury he sustained against PSV. Life is always difficult for a professional sportsman especially when he is coming back from an injury, never mind coming back from a broken leg. That’s how huge Shaw’s struggles have been. The magnitude of his injury was big and for a player of such young age, it was going to be a big hurdle to overcome. After facing 10 months out with a broken tibia, Shaw made his comeback against Wigan Athletic in a pre-season friendly game in the summer of 2016. However, things haven’t been smooth for Shaw since then.
He has been in and out of the first team ever since coming back from his injury and has never really managed to find his old self back. Initially, Mourinho was keen to use Shaw to the fullest of his potential. But a groin injury forced Mourinho to remove the player from his plans, and a spell on treatment table followed. Shaw last made a Premier League appearance on October 29, 2016 and hasn’t featured in the league since then.
After his last return, Mourinho has been a little more cautious with Luke and hasn’t played him much. Shaw was not included in the games against Hull and Leicester in recent weeks and there is a growing fear that Shaw may never really make a comeback into the current United set-up.
This has led to rumours of a potential exit for Luke Shaw from the doors of Old Trafford and it seems like White Hart Lane might be the likely destination. Pochettino has always had a good relationship with Luke Shaw and was extremely supportive during his struggle with a broken leg. It might be a tempting proposition for Shaw to unite with his former manager, but grass is not always green on the other side.
Although Shaw is currently not in the first team, it has always been clear that the Manchester United board has shown faith in him and has stuck with him through his ups and downs. There is a reason why United spent heavily on the former Southampton full-back, who was the most expensive teenager in world football at that time. The investment was made with the future of the club in mind. Shaw, despite his setbacks, he remains one of England’s top young talents and is only still 21 years old.
With all due respect to Spurs, it wouldn’t be great for the talented left-back to move away from a club of Manchester United’s stature. If Shaw does hold his patience and continue fighting his way back into the line-up, the future may well hold good for the England International. Rather than seeking an escape route, it would be wise for a player of Shaw’s calibre to try and follow the paths of legendary Manchester United left-backs like Tony Dunne, Arthur Albiston, Denis Irwin and Patrice Evra.
They say in football; it’s not over until it’s over. It sure does apply perfectly to a certain Luke Paul Hoare Shaw.
